Well another bozo has opened shop and is selling canvas prints on ebay without permission from the artist. Well..he didn't get my permission and removed my signature....but I saw at least five other pieces I recognized as deviant artist's and will try to contact them. If you recognize something and know the person, would you let them know, or at least tell me who it is and I will. This bullshit needs to stop. Here is a link to my piece on there, click visit store to see other's.

Update: This morning the ebay seller in question has apologized and ended the listing, either that or Ebay did. As I looked through his inventory it is much more that five deviants affected, I would say at least half of the work was taken from this site. So...if you find this important spreading the word through journals or comments on the art would be a very helpful thing you could do. Many of you already have and it is appreciated.

Newest: As of tonight this person has removed all listings. Again not sure if Ebay did it...or him. I sent him a message this morning that I was not his only problem, that I had told every artist who's work I had seen there was contacted with a link. Plus many of you spoke up and acted. So thanks for getting this taken care of. I will continue to watch ebay for this kind of thing.

I hadnt been here for a long time, looked in yesterday and found your message and the link to my work on ebay. The listing had closed but he had a current one up.

I contacted ebay about both. I am very grateful to you for your consideration and efforts in alerting people to this and trying to stop him.

It was weird for me because it coincided my having problems retrieving original work from a shop too..... so whilst on one hand it added to my feelings of being suckered, on the other I felt it was a very valubale lesson in terms of making it harder for anyone to do that, and being less trusting and more mindful about how accessible I make my stuff ( I slapped watermarks on my two most popular pieces and will probably do some more).

That all said, this may not be a popular thing to say but - I wonder how many of us have never violated anyones copyright. What this guy is doing is wrong, but he is hardly raking in big bucks with it, and I have to confess that the work of mine that he took was painted from a reference shot for which I did not have permission..... so I feel it's also a reminder to me about my own responsibilities.
What I'm saying is, once you step over the line (which I did, maybe along with some others who have been affected in this way) you are going to encounter people who have overstepped it further. It all becomes one big grey area with different shades.

It's just a thought but anyone in my position (ie of making what you think is a small violation and that leading to someone else doing something similar or seemingly worse to you) maybe its worth considering ways of working that do not cross that line.

I'm just saying. :)

Many thanks again for your efforts. They really are much appreciated.

Well said... I have to have reference shots for anything I do, I am not good enough to just sit down and draw something without any reference. And it's not something I really think about enough. Sorry he is going again with this stuff. My big thing is at least ask the artist permission, I realize he is not likely making a lot of money over it, and it probably is his livelihood. I agree it is a grey area. Although it still infuritates me when he takes the time to remove the artists signature. No two ways about it that is wrong. I do appreciate hearing your views and I think you make a good point.

I meant it about appreciating your efforts. Although I look at things from all angles, the bottom line is nobody likes to be suckered. I just reported his using my stuff for the 3rd day running and also sent him a message pointing out that he is dumb cos if he worked with the artists, instead of ripping us off, we could have generated more business for him, as his prices are really good....lol
I also dropped a line to a gallery which represents a high profile photographer whose work he is offering, just cos he is disrespecting that work and it's really special. If it pisses the guy off enough he could probably close him down, although I dont suppose he will care that much.
So dumb though, when he could do so much better by showing some respect for the creativity he relies on!

I was actually tempted to order a large print of the one of mine he had, because I wanted it and I wanted to see the quality. It couldn't have been too good. The online image is not near high enough res to do much with it. But I see he sold at least one of them, and I would love to talk to that person. Has he pulled your image down yet? He apologized on mine and told me it would not be on there again..but I wouldn't be surprised to see it again after a little time passes. I hope he gives you at least that. And hey it's good to hear a different angle...I contacted about thirty artists that night, and I am surprised you are the only one I have heard back from on it. Like you say people just may not care...

Yes, i wondered about his print quality too....his prices are good by UK standards and his feedback seems fine for quality - but I guess we will be more demanding than the average customer.
Yes, he did take it down after I contacted him directly. He didnt respond to me, but I had told him that I didnt want to hear bullshit apologies as I knew he had made them to other people....
I see he still has the Daft Punk poster on sale....
Watermarks have always pissed me off, but I've stuck them on my images of famous people now.
Maybe some of the people you contacted did something but didnt have the courtesy to thank you.... who knows! Its true some people do just shrug it off, Ive been involved in a similar discussion recently with musicians, many of whom just accept that their promos will be sold, and so on. Just the world we live in I guess, but I think what you have done is a really cool balance to that!

Oh man that is bullshit. Write ebay and complain they will pull it down. I will do it for you. The guy who did this.. they yanked all of his listings off there...

Thanks so much for drawing our attention to this thieving swine. It's horrible when someone takes the easy route to make money off the hard work of others. Although he has no listings up anymore (hoping his ass has been banned) it's gut-wrenching to see that he has over 500 sales - probably all from prints of artists' work.

I dislike putting watermarks on my work, but to stop people taking money from the artists, it seems to be the only way to deter them.

Good job on finding him
